Printer Pixma iP1700 Can Work With Ubuntu

Finaly, i have made my printer (Pixma iP1700) can work with ubuntu 7.04 (fesity fawn)

Using iP2200 driver for linux, now iP1700 can print smoothly.

But im not using packages from the vendor, instead im using the packages from this.

This is my steps how to install the driver (using terminal)
1. Add the repository
$ sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

-Add this 2 following lines(sources.list)
deb http://mambo.kuhp.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~takushi/ubuntu ./
deb-src http://mambo.kuhp.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~takushi/ubuntu ./

2. Update
$sudo apt-get update

3. Install packages
$sudo apt-get install libcnbj-2.6 bjfilter-2.6 pstocanonbj

4.Add the printer (make sure to turn on the printer)
-From your browser, input this URL: http://localhost:631
-Choose “Administration” Menu
-Add “Canon iP1700 (Canon iP1700 USB #1)” from the list
-Add model to Canon iP2200 Ver.2.60
-Leave the configuration with click “Set Printer Options”

5.Testing printer
-Click the “Print Test Page” Button

6. Finish

I think there is no difference between packages from vendor and packages that i used.
You must change the packages first from .rpm to .deb with ‘alien’ command, if you use the packages form vendor
And you must sure to set the “Output Resolution” to 600 dpi. Change it to higher level, make printer cannot work.

There is some references:
1.http://mambo.kuhp.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~takushi/
2.Driver Printer Canon ip1700 di Linux

Who said there is no printer can work with linux?
Don’t believe that gossip!!!
I just have made one working.
Try linux as soon as posible, trust me..

tp usut punya usut, cek di sini kyk’a kompatibel juga buat ip1600 driver ip2200
mungkin bisa dicoba dulu yg dr canon’a langsung (versi rpm, ubah pake alien).
sori gk bisa ngejawab, gk ada printernya seh, gk bisa dicoba langsung

waduh gw dijadiin refrensi neh critanya, hahaha.. πŸ˜›

    wah…..ternyata printer canon…udah bisa ya…
    cool……thx….

sempat kesel juga sama canon yg gak mau bikin driver versi opensourcenya….
gak masuk akalkan… klo kita beli hardwarenya tapi gak dapet drivernya,,,,,(ato drivernya hanya untuk satu OS aja…)

makanya pilihanku jatuh ke hp…..yg sejak dulu support komunitas opensource…

btw kpn driver canonnya masuk repo ya???

You are a legend mate! It worked!

My error was trying to add the printer via System>Administration>PrinterConfiguration (after installing the driver), without luck. But following your direction and adding the printer via http://localhost:631 did the trick. I don’t understand the disparity.

    @bob
    congrats πŸ™‚

I think there was no differences between yours and my steps.
Maybe when you added the driver via PrinterConfiguration, you didn’t choose the right driver(Canon iP2200 Ver.2.60).
or maybe you didn’t use packets from the repository(http://mambo.kuhp.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~takushi/ubuntu ./).
I had used from the vendor(canon) once, and it didn’t work, although i had changed it to *.deb via alien.

    nb: That’s my opinion :-p

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
    pstocanonbj : Depends: libcupsys2 (>= 1.2.3)
Depends: cupsys but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
